During a routine inspection

Before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. We saw that people were asked what they wanted to do and staff gained implied consent before support was provided.

Staff we spoke with told us that it was important to encourage people's independence to make sure people did as much as they could and staff would provide appropriate support to prevent potential risks. We reviewed two support plans and saw that they included comprehensive information about people and reflected individual choices and personal preferences.

A person we spoke with told us that they were unhappy with the home and that things needed replacing. We spoke with the registered manager about this and they told us about an ongoing programme to redecorate areas of the home.

We found that records including support plans and records in relation to the maintenance of the building were kept up-to-date and accurate. Records were stored securely and kept for an appropriate amount of time before being destroyed securely.

8 February 2013

During a routine inspection

People that we spoke with during our inspection on 8 February 2013 were positive and satisfied with the care and support they received. One person commented that, 'The staff are very helpful and help me during the day.' People said that they had a keyworker to help them organise their week and any events that were coming up. People told us they could talk to the manager and staff whenever they wanted to sort out any problems or concerns.

Care and support was being regularly reviewed to ensure that peoples' needs were being met. There was evidence of people's involvement in the planning of their care and support.

Staff were trained in the safe administration of medication. Records of administration were accurately completed.

Staff had received regular supervision. Ongoing staff training arrangements were in place that ensured staff delivered safe care and support to people.

The home had an effective system to deal with any complaints that people might raise. People in the home told us they talked with staff regularly and any concerns were discussed and resolved

During a routine inspection

The main building of St Germans House is currently not being used, however, the bungalow known as Abbotsford situated on the same property houses three people. Two people were at home but the third person was staying with family at the time of our visit.

Two of the people living in the bungalow were pleased to talk to us and one person told us they were happy with the support they get and liked living there. We were in the bungalow while the evening meal was being cooked and one person living there explained about how each person chooses which meal they will cook. They told us the person cooking that day will decide on the meal, buy the ingredients and cook for everyone that evening.

We were told that staff do ask if people are happy and people explained about how their relatives are involved in their routines and staff keep them fully informed. People living in the bungalow also confirmed they are given choices and plan things such as holidays with help from staff.

One person told us that this was the best place they had been, they liked their room and the fact they could travel on the bus.

When discussing any problems or difficulties that may occur, one person said they would always talk to staff and know they would help with anything.
