All Inspections

17 April 2013

During a routine inspection

This inspection included checking that improvements had been made to the care and welfare of people as the provider was non compliant following our inspection on 26 October 2012. We found that the issues identified had been addressed.

During this inspection we found that before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. Staff knew people living at Riverside very well and were able to interpret their non verbal and verbal communication in order to assess mood, behaviours and wellbeing.

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. One person said, 'she's (staff) brilliant. She can't do no more. I've had a grand wash and enjoyed it.' Two relatives told us they felt staff looked after their family members well.

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. We found the home was free from unpleasant odours and in the main furnishings and fittings were dust free.

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

We found that the provider and manager had a system in place to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.

29 October 2012

During a routine inspection

During the SOFI we saw people's views and experiences were taken into account because they moved around the home as they wished and chose what they wanted to do. We saw that people's privacy, dignity and independence was respected, but staff did not always knock on people's doors before they entered.

All of the relatives we spoke with were satisfied with the care and welfare provided to their relative. However, during the SOFI we saw two people being transferred to wheelchairs in an inappropriate and unsafe way, which may cause harm to the person and/or members of staff.

We found people who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening and staff were appointed only after appropriate checks had taken place.

We found the manager had a system in place to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.
