During an inspection looking at part of the service

We gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by talking with people, observing how they spent their time and noting how they interacted with other people living in the home and with staff.

During our inspection we saw that people received care that met their needs. We noted that improvements had been made since our last inspection and overall staff understood people's preferences and delivered care respectfully. Improvements had been made to people's individual care records which were better organised and contained the information staff needed to deliver care safely.

On the day of our inspection we saw that people enjoyed their lunch and improvements had been made in the quality and variety of food available. Staff ensured that people with specific dietary needs, such as a soft or pureed food, received appropriate meals.

Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of people who lived at Springbank; staff received the support and training they needed to enable them to care for people safely.

During a routine inspection

We gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by talking with people, observing how they spent their time and noting how they interacted with other people living in the home and with staff.

During our inspection we saw that care was not delivered consistently by all staff. We observed some staff to be respectful in their approach to people, they showed an understanding of people's needs and were polite. We also noted poor practices such as shouting and using indiscreet language, which was disrespectful to people who lived in the home. We saw that staff were busy carrying out tasks and there were insufficient staff to spend quality time with people.

People's individual care records did not contain sufficient relevant information about their needs and preferences. Processes had begun to improve the care planning system but there were some areas, such as health records, where information was missing. This meant that staff did not have the necessary information and guidance to deliver care safely and people were at risk of not receiving appropriate care and support.

A variety of food was available and we saw that people enjoyed their meal on the day of our inspection. However, people with specific needs around food could not always be confident that these needs would be met appropriately.

Some record keeping examined during the inspection was poor, lacking in detail and incomplete. This included care records and some of the information in staff files.

During an inspection in response to concerns

During our visit we were able to hold a conversation with four people. Others were able to make comments about specific issues, such as the quality of the meals, whether or not they liked their room, if they liked staff or if they liked living at Springbank however most of the information about people's experiences was gathered through our observations.

People who use the service described the staff as caring and helpful. People told us that there were enough staff on duty and that they responded to requests for help. People also told us that the meals provided included sufficient variety and that the standard of the food was good.

People told us that they felt safe and that, if they had any concerns or worries, they would discuss them with their relative or a member of staff.
