How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 7 November 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare.

Reasons for our judgement

Comments from people using the service about the support provided to them included "I'm very happy with it - can't fault it", "I find it helpful here" and "I'm happy with the support". Other comments included "the staff keep me informed" and "I have a support plan with targets for me to achieve".

Feedback from staff included "this service is brilliant" and "a fantastic service although a very difficult service to run". We saw that the team working at Sisters Avenue was small and we observed constant discussion between staff members about individuals and daily events. One staff member told us that the team "works really well together" and another individual said "it's well run".

Support plans looked at during our visit addressed areas such as drug and alcohol use, housing, education and training and personal development. Assessment documentation was also in place giving descriptions of any identified risks along with clear infirmation as to how these were to be managed. All of the care documentation seen was being regulalry reviewed and kept up to date.

Staff told us that the support plans were drawn up with the person using the service when they came to stay at Sisters Avenue. An allocated key worker (a named staff member who works alongside them to support them with meeting their goals) then reviewed the plan with them during the regular one to one sessions held with each individual. People using the service said "they've supported me through the key working sessions" and "my key work session happens every week and the door is always open in between". We saw records of these meetings were kept on each person's file with the content of discussions clearly linked to the individual support plan.

Two people using the service spoke of their wish to enter the 'move on' accommodation in the future. This was a separate property overseen by staff where people from Sisters Avenue could go to live (as vacancies allow) if they have maintained abstinence for three months and completed a day treatment programme provided locally.
