During a routine inspection

We spoke with five of the 23 people who lived at Walberton Care Home. People told us they were very happy with the care and services provided at the home. One person said, "Walberton Care Home is excellent! I would recommend it to others." Another person commented, "The staff are very patient and they certainly do their best to keep us happy. We are well looked after." We also spoke with two relatives who were visiting at the same time. They confirmed they were satisfied with the delivery of care.

We spoke with two members of staff, who were on duty. We found that they had a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities. They demonstrated they knew how to identify and report potential incidents of abuse.

We also gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by looking at a selection of records. This included care records and medication records. They demonstrated that people had given consent to the care they had received. We found that the needs of people had not always been fully assessed prior to admission. We found that care records did not always provide nursing and care staff with appropriate information to follow with regard to the delivery of care. This meant that individual needs may not have been met.

We found that there were gaps in medication records. This meant people may not have received medication that had been prescribed to them. The manager was unable to demonstrate, where dosages of medication had been changed, that unused medication had been disposed of safely.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who have been accommodated at Walberton Care Home. Two people could not easily communicate with us. However, from observation, they appeared well cared for. One of these people did tell us they were very happy and comfortable. Three people told us about the care and support they needed had confirmed they were very satisfied with the care they had received. They also confirmed that they found staff were competent and skilled when providing for their needs.

One person told us, "The staff are competent, proficient and so calm." A second person said, 'The nurses are very good. All the staff are very polite.'

However, one person said, 'It's a bit slapdash. They staff are easy going ' as long as you don't say anything it's alright.'

We spoke with three members of staff who were on duty. They informed us that they had received training that provided them with the necessary skills to deliver the care and

support to people that was required. They also said they felt well supported by the manager in their work.

The atmosphere throughout the visit was good. It was calm, friendly and homely. We observed staff on duty had a good relationship with the people living there. When talking to people, staff were friendly and professional. They spoke clearly to ensure they were understood and listened carefully to make sure they knew what was expected of them.
