During a routine inspection

People told us they understood the care choices that were available. Comments from people included; "They tell me everything and keep me involved", "When my care plan was written they asked me if I agreed to everything", "My carer is fantastic. He helps me with my shopping and helps me to cook".

We saw that where there was a concern about a person's health and welfare needs, the advice and support of various professionals in the multi-disciplinary team had been sought.

People told us they considered their relative to be safe when care was provided by the service. People who used the service also told us they felt safe with the staff who supported them when care was provided.

We saw that Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) disclosure checks, and more recently Disclosure and Barring Service checks (DBS) were completed for all members of staff. The regional operations manager told us that such checks took place every three years for staff who had worked for Care UK for a longer period of time.

Staff told us that they felt well supported and had the information they needed for their roles. Comments from them included; "The management team are great. They are the best I have worked with" and "There is a very good continuous training programme".

We saw that care plans, staff files, accident and incident records and late / missed calls were audited regularly. When concerns were raised, an action plan was drawn up to enable progress to be made.

12 June 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out a visit to the office of the service on 12 June and made telephone calls to people who use the service and staff employed by the service on 13 June 2012.

We spoke with four people who were receiving a service. All said they had been asked what their needs were before they started receiving the service and the manager had discussed with them the care the service could provide.

People told us staff always consulted them about their individual needs and involved them in decisions about their care and treatment. They also told us that staff always maintained their dignity when carrying out personal care.

However, one person said they didn't always know who was coming each day. This person received a service five days a week and the care worker who used to visit on two of the days had recently left and different care workers had been attending.

All the people we spoke with said they received the help they needed and they were happy with and confident in the staff that provided their care. One person said 'I've had this service for many years. They're very reliable and I'm quite happy with it.' They all said 'The staff are very good'.

People told us that they felt safe and well cared for. We asked them if they would know how to raise a concern about something that was worrying them. They expressed confidence that if they had a problem they would be able to discuss it with the registered manager and that it would be taken seriously.

People also told us that they were asked for feedback. One person said 'Oh yes, I get forms to fill in quite regularly'.
