During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in October 2012 we found non compliance in a number of areas. We issued two warning notices and asked the provider to develop plans to achieve compliance in all areas. The purpose of this inspection was to check that suitable action had been taken for the provider to be compliant with the outcomes.

Since October 2012 the provider had put a lot of measures in place to achieve compliance. Records had been updated and held securely. All equipment had been serviced and where necessary calibrated. Checklists were in place for each ambulance and cleaning schedules had been produced. Appropriate arrangements were in place for obtaining and recording medicines.

During a routine inspection

Due to the nature of the service provided, we were unable to speak to any people that have used the service. Concerns had been raised with us by the Primary Care Trust regarding how the provider manages controlled drugs.

We reviewed documents provided by the service and inspected two of the ambulances. The provider was unable to provide us with any policies or procedures in relation to controlling infection. We were also unable to look at other documents in relation to vehicle servicing and equipment maintenance. Our pharmacist inspector had cause for concern regarding controlled drugs. We also reviewed patient records and found they were not kept securely.
