Overview

Inspection carried out on 20 November 2013

During a routine inspection

Liskeard Community Hospital, run by Peninsula Community Health, provided inpatient services on Willow ward (19 beds) and Oak ward (33 beds 25 currently in use), outpatient services on behalf of Peninsula Community Health and Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, therapy services such as physiotherapy and an X-ray department open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. The hospital also had a minor injuries unit (MIU) open daily from 8am to 10pm.

During the inspection we had a tour of the whole hospital and spent some time on the MIU, Willow ward and Oak ward.

We saw care records were detailed and gave direction as to the care and support people needed. They had been regularly updated. Patients we spoke with told us staff had discussed their care and support needs with them whilst they were in hospital and they were aware of their discharge plans.

Patients and staff we spoke with told us they thought there were enough staff on duty.

People were cared for by staff who were properly supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

We saw evidence of ongoing audits in areas including infection control, hand hygiene, and falls.

There was an effective complaints system available.
