During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection there were twenty two people living at the home. We spoke with four people who lived at the home and one relative. We also spoke with three members of staff.

One person who lived at the home told us, 'They are looking after me well. I am very happy here.'

A member of staff told us, 'I am very happy with the standard of the care here. I had some safeguarding training last week. There have been a lot of changes here with new management and a new deputy'.

We reviewed the provider's arrangements for the management of medicines and found that arrangements which were in place for the storage of medicines were not adequate or safe.

We looked at notifications to us regarding serious incidents and found the provider did not have an effective system in place to ensure we were informed of these incidents.

We found that the provider had not maintained accurate care records.

During a routine inspection

Residents told us they were very happy with the care and accommodation they received. One person told us, 'You get what you want, nothing is too much trouble.'

The home appeared warm and welcoming, with a pleasant and calm atmosphere.

People told us they felt safe in the home and we found that staff knew how to protect them and what to do if an allegation of abuse was made.

One person we spoke with told us the matron visited them before they moved in to find out about their care needs. Some of the people we spoke with were not sure about their care plans but said they felt listened to and their wishes had been respected.

Residents told us they enjoyed the meals and a choice is offered. One person we spoke with thought the meals were too large.

When we visited the home the activity coordinator was supporting people in an art and craft session in preparation for the Queens Jubilee. The people we spoke with who were participating in the activity said they enjoyed the activities provided. One person said they did not always choose to join in the activities but received opportunities to go into the local community.

We spoke with some visitors who told us their relative was very happy and well cared for. 'It's an excellent service, I wouldn't want them anywhere else.' They said they visit regularly, their visits are unannounced and at different times. 'We are always made welcome, everything always appears the same, calm and relaxed.'

Some people we spoke with said they had not had to make a complaint but would not hesitate to do so if necessary. They said they had confidence in the manager to respond appropriately if they did. Another person told us the communication was good, 'To be fair it's quite good here, better than the previous home. The matron does respond to any issues or concerns raised.'
