During an inspection looking at part of the service

We undertook this follow up inspection to monitor the provider's compliance to this outcome. When we inspected on 24 July 2013 we found that the practice did not have a system in place which enabled them to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received. In this inspection (05 February 2014) we found that the provider now had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

They undertook patient satisfaction surveys and had completed an infection control audit. Audits were also in place regarding the completion of care records, monitoring the do not attend appointments and the use and effectiveness or orthodontic appliances.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with confirmed that the orthodontist always explained what they were going to do. They said that the information on how to look after their teeth and their braces was given to them both verbally and in leaflets. They told us that they were "very happy" with the level of information they had received. One person told us, "The staff are very good at explaining, the information discussed is always very clear and all staff give a full explanation of treatment options.' When we spoke with one person attending the practice for treatment they told us, 'It is a warm and friendly practice. The staff are great and very supportive.'

Due to the nature of the service provided all people receiving treatment remained under the care of their own dental practitioner. The practice facilities were clean and well maintained with appropriate floor and surface coverings. However there were no cleaning logs maintained to demonstrate what had been done and by whom.

We found that staff received appropriate professional development and were able to obtain further qualifications. One member of staff told us; 'We are a good team and have worked together for a long while. We have a full team approach rather than an them and us.' We were also told that as a result of the practice having a small staff team and little staff turnover that there was an open culture for discussing anything of concern and that supervision was an on-going continual process.
