All Inspections

30 September and 4 October 2013

During a routine inspection

Services were provided exclusively to people living within the shared lives scheme. The shared lives scheme was supported by an allocated manager and two office based staff 'scheme officers' who were responsible for the recruitment of care workers known as "carers" and their support. We were told that the allocated social worker was responsible for the care provision of each person placed with a shared lives carer.

Care plans called 'support plans' were sufficiently detailed and person centred. There was clear evidence that people who used the service were fully involved in the planning and review of their care. People who used the service known as 'customers' told us that they were very happy with the care they received and felt in control of their lives.

There were appropriate medication and complaints policies and procedures in place.

Recruitment processes were fit for purpose.

There was evidence that the scheme manager monitored the safety and quality of the service provided but there was no overall system which brought all of this information together and set objectives and actions to further enhance the service.

Comments from Shared Lives carers.

'This is a stepping stone for people to get well and back into the community. We have to have yearly updates, like first aid, health and safety and safeguarding adults. Our training is very important to us; we are very impressed with the training.'

'I can call up the Shared Lives staff about anything that bothers me and they will sort it out. I found the training very valuable. The Effective Communication training was powerful, it was brilliant'.

Comment from a person using the Shared Lives service

'I now have somebody to talk to and I have made friends. I am given choices and my family come here to visit me'.
