People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 8 March 2013, observed how people were being cared for and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were supported by staff who were suitable to carry out their role.

Reasons for our judgement

Our inspection of 10 December 2012 had found that six staff did not have their completed criminal records bureau (CRB) checks.

During this inspection, we found that four staff had received their CRB check. This is a check carried out to ensure that staff members were suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. We saw evidence that showed the completed forms had been sent for one staff member, and the practice manager was awaiting for the CRB check to return. The remaining CRB check for one staff member had not been completed as they were not currently working. The practice manager informed us that this would be processed as soon as the staff member returned to work. This meant that appropriate checks were carried out for staff members to ensure were suitable to work with people at the dental practice.
