Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 10 December 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

Staff were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with people at the dental practice, but their comments did not relate to this outcome.

Our inspection of 6 August 2012 had found that there was insufficient evidence to demonstrate whether staff had received essential training to ensure they had the skills and competence to undertake their role.

During this inspection, we found that staff had received training and continuous processional development (CPD) in a wide range of areas, including safeguarding, decontamination and resuscitation. Staff were able to explain these processes to us in detail. Staff we spoke with told us that training had improved. One staff said, “It is definitely better now, we have quite a lot of training.” This meant that improvements had been made in the availability of this information, and in the training opportunities provided for staff.
