People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Not met this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 10 December 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

Appropriate checks were not always undertaken promptly to ensure staff were suitable to work with people.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with people at the dental practice, but their comments did not relate to this outcome.

Our inspection of 6 August 2012 had found that not all staff working at the dental practice had appropriate checks undertaken to ensure they were suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults.

During this inspection, we found that six staff continued not to have completed their criminal records bureau (CRB) checks. The practice manager showed us completed CRB forms with reference numbers for four of the six staff members. The practice manager told us that these were sent to the primary care trust (PCT). We spoke with a staff member at the PCT who informed us that they would no longer be completing these checks. We saw arrangements being made for the checks to be completed elsewhere, whilst we were inspecting. The practice manager told us that it was agreed that staff that had not had these checks completed would always be supervised. This meant that, whilst provisions were in place, we could not be assured that staff were suitable to be working with people at the dental practice.
