People should be given the medicines they need when they need them, and in a safe way (outcome 9)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Will have their medicines at the times they need them, and in a safe way.
  • Wherever possible will have information about the medicine being prescribed made available to them or others acting on their behalf.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 10 December 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with people at the dental practice, but their comments did not relate to this outcome.

Our inspection of 6 August 2012 had found that there was medication in stock for treatments that the practice did not offer and that staff were not trained to administer.

During this inspection, we found that arrangements had been made for the medication we had found previously, to be disposed. We spoke with the practice manager and staff, who confirmed that there had not been any further deliveries for this medication. We found that only medicine that might be required at the dental surgery was stored and available.
