The service should have quality checking systems to manage risks and assure the health, welfare and safety of people who receive care (outcome 16)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Benefit from safe quality care, treatment and support, due to effective decision making and the management of risks to their health, welfare and safety.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 3 October 2013, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care and talked with people who use the service. We talked with carers and / or family members, talked with staff and reviewed information given to us by the provider.

We also reviewed the results of recent written feedback from people using the service and their families.

Our judgement

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

Reasons for our judgement

People who use the service and their representatives were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on. Staff reported that they kept in regular contact with people using the service about the quality of care and support being provided and people we spoke with confirmed this. The feedback the service received from this had been positive. They were able to give examples of how they had adapted the care and support being provided where appropriate.

Senior staff would supervise the care and support being provided by their care staff every six to eight weeks and care staff confirmed this. They also sent out questionnaires to people and their representatives and the responses they had received had been positive.

There was a policy and procedure in place for any accidents or incidents to be reported, recorded and responded to. Staff were trained in this during their induction to the service. At the time of the inspection no significant incidents or accidents had occurred.

As part of the care planning review process the risk assessments of people's home environments were reviewed on a six monthly or annual basis to ensure that the environment was still safe.
