We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 16 March 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for by staff that were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.

Reasons for our judgement

We talked to both support workers about the needs of the sisters who lived at the home and asked them how they ensured they got the right care they needed in an appropriate and safe way. Both staff demonstrated a sound understanding of the needs of the sisters and how to meet them. The support workers spoke with confidence when talking about the work they did and when talking about the people they supported. They told us they had a small, effective team that the manager had an 'open door policy', was a responsive and a proactive person. They told us the manager worked diligently to meet both the needs of the sisters using the service as well as giving them their support and meeting their training needs.

A support worker told us "We are all well supported and are given the training we need to do our jobs well". Both support workers we spoke with said that they that there was a close working relationship and that there were opportunities for ongoing training in the home. The manager had completed a registered manager’s award and both support workers had achieved a National Vocational Qualification at level 2 in care.

Staff files confirmed that they had received a wide range of training. Training had been provided in varied forms such as ‘on line’ training and training that had been provided by the local authority and Stroud College. Training undertaken had included manual handling, infection control, medicines awareness, fire training, epilepsy awareness, emergency first aid, health and safety awareness, an introduction to autism awareness and learning disabilities. One support worker told us that they had completed a ‘cooking is fun’ course. They and one of the sisters being supported told us of their enjoyment putting the skills learnt into practice by cooking together. This support worker also told us that they had recently completed some training in respect of diabetes awareness. They told us the training had been useful and provided them with knowledge of signs and symptoms to be aware of in respect of this condition.

All of the staff had been trained in safeguarding of vulnerable adults (SOVA) and had a good understanding of what constituted abuse or poor practice. This showed us that the sisters living at the home had their health and welfare needs met by staff who received training to enable them to do their job.

We saw from personnel records that formal supervisions was carried out with staff on a one-to-one basis. Supervision plans had a set agenda and areas of discussion included the care and welfare of the sisters being supported, training and development needs and a discussion about a policy relating to the delivery of the service. We saw that in February 2013 the policies discussed with staff had included public interest disclosure and the complaints policy. This meant that staff had been supported and provided with guidance in order to carry out their duties and to understand their role and responsibilities in supporting the people in their care.

The manager and both support workers told us that appraisals had been undertaken and evidence of this was seen by us in staff files. This showed us that staff had been supported to maintain their continual professional development.
