Staff should be properly trained and supervised, and have the chance to develop and improve their skills (outcome 14)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by competent staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 23 September 2013 and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were supported by staff who had received training and supervision to deliver care and treatment to meet people’s needs.

Reasons for our judgement

At the 5 July inspection we found the provider needed to take action with regards to the supervision and appraisals of the staff. This would ensure they could meet the needs of the people who used the service. We asked the provider to send us information about how they would ensure that staff received supervision and appraisals to show how they intended to meet the actions required.

The provider sent us the information we asked for on 9 September 2013. This outlined how staff were being supported to carry out their roles effectively.

We looked at files of all five staff who worked at the home. We found that all have received regular supervision (this is a work based performance and development tool used by organisations to support their workforce). We also found that one staff member had received appraisal and four other staff had been booked to receive their appraisals on 26 and 28 September 2013. One staff member we met on duty confirmed they had received regular supervision.

The manager told us that they also used group supervision to discuss concerns about the people who used the service. This ensured staff took action to provide better care for the people who used the service.

We saw that the supervision policy had been reviewed. This provided clear guidance on the frequency of supervision and how supervision should be carried out to support staff.

We were satisfied that the provider had addressed the action we set at the last inspection and was now compliant with the regulation.
