People should be protected from abuse and staff should respect their human rights (outcome 7)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are protected from abuse, or the risk of abuse, and their human rights are respected and upheld.

How this check was done

We carried out a visit on 5 March 2014, observed how people were being cared for, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

Reasons for our judgement

People who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. There was a policy and procedure in place that described the action staff should take in order to keep people safe from abuse. We spoke to staff who demonstrated knowledge of different types of abuse and how to report it. Staff told us and we saw records that showed us they had received training in safeguarding vulnerable adults. Staff told us how they would report any concerns and who they would contact. This meant they had the knowledge and skills to recognise situations which may need to be raised as safeguarding concerns.

Records showed that people were protected from financial abuse because the provider had a procedure in place when helping them to manage their money. This included maintaining a clear account of all money received and spent. Some items were kept locked away for safekeeping, for example, credit cards, keys and mobile telephones. These items were listed individually and signed for on entry to PCP (Chelmsford) and again on leaving. This meant that people had access to money in a timely way.
