During a routine inspection

We spoke with eight people who used the service and we spoke with three relatives of people who used the service.

People we spoke said that they were happy with the care that they received. They said 'the staff are very kind and caring', 'I am very happy with the care' and the staff are very friendly'. One person told us, 'The staff are friendly, jolly and welcoming', and 'staff always check to make sure that I am alright'.

People told us that they enjoyed the activities which they could choose to participate in or not. People told us that they enjoyed their meals and that there was always a choice. For people who required support with eating their meals we observed staff sitting beside people and they assisted them with their meal in a sensitive way.

People said that they thought there was always enough staff on duty. We observed staff interacting with people in a friendly and caring manner.

During a routine inspection

People living at the home told us they were supported and enabled to do things for themselves. Those with capacity said they were encouraged to express their views and make or participate in making decisions relating to their care and treatment. A carer of a person using services told us that staff were respectful and protected their relative's dignity and privacy. Some people said that the staff's response to call bells was sometimes a little slow. They were understanding that staff may be very busy at times and said when staff did arrive they responded well to their requests and were always polite. Some people said that they didn't want to take part in planned activities or their frailty deterred them from doing so. They said they were however always told what activities were going on in the home and were encouraged to join in. Some people voiced dissatisfaction with the food provided, but said they were always offered an alternative and there was generally a choice of menu. Some people said the home could do with being 'updated'.
