All Inspections

30 January 2014

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service. To ensure that we had time to see and speak to staff and people who used the service we arranged the visit in advance. During the inspection we spoke with ten people who used the service, 17 carers or family members, ten members of staff, the registered manager and the provider.

The people we spoke with told us that an emphasis had been placed on offering a choice of days, time and frequency of visits. They confirmed that an assessment of their care had been completed prior to receiving the service. They told us reviews of their care had taken place and that staff had been supportive of their care requirements.

The staff we spoke with said their training provided them the necessary knowledge and understanding required to support people receiving care in their own homes.

In order to monitor the quality of the service provided by Home Instead Senior Care systems were in place to obtain feedback from people using the service. One person told us: "They really are very genuine and I feel that they value my opinions."

During a routine inspection

We carried out this review to check on the care and welfare of people who used this service. The visit was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming. In this report the name of a registered manager appears. They were not in post at this service at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were still a Registered Manager on our register at the time. There was a new manager in post at the service.

During our inspection we looked at how privacy and dignity of people who used the service was respected. All the people we spoke with were complementary of the staff. One person said, 'The staff are very respectful'.

The people we spoke with confirmed the staff were supportive of their care requirements. They said staff had the skills and knowledge required to support them with their care needs.

We asked the staff about their understanding of safeguarding (protecting vulnerable adults). The staff we spoke with confirmed they had received the appropriate training. Staff were able to tell how they would raise concerns if necessary.

We looked at staff personnel files and saw that the necessary checks were made to ensure staff were suitable to do their job, for example, satisfactory criminal records bureau disclosures (CRB) and references were in place.

The provider had systems in place to ensure people could raise concerns or complaints in order to improve the quality of the care received.
