All Inspections

12 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke individually with the registered manager and staff at Ashbourne Lodge. Because people living at the home have dementia, we were unable to speak to anyone receiving care. Therefore, we undertook a Short Observational Framework for Inspection to check how people experienced care. We also spoke to relatives. We reviewed care records, policies and procedures, audits and risk assessment documentation.

One relative told us, 'Care is brilliant. I've been here quite a lot and they use the right equipment. They are very caring'. Another relative said, 'Staff are caring and my wife is safe here.'

The service demonstrated good practice that ensured people were protected from abuse. Care practice and record-keeping was underpinned by clear, regular auditing procedures. Practices in relation to the administration of medication appeared to be safe and adequate.

We observed that staff were able to provide treatment in a respectful, timely and unhurried way. This was because staff were supported to carry out their duties effectively.

During a routine inspection

We spoke individually with four people living at Ashbourne Lodge. More informal discussion also took place in communal areas of the home, at various times during our visit. We asked people to tell us about their experiences of living at the home. People told us they were happy living there.

We were also told that the staff team were patient and kind. People felt there were enough staff on duty and that they felt safe living at the home. One person said, 'It's very good here, the staff do the best they can". Another individual told us, 'There's plenty of staff on duty they really look after you."

We observed the interaction between the staff and the people who used the service. We observed that staff were respectful of people and treated them with dignity. For example, we saw staff knocking on people's bedroom doors before entering. We also saw staff offer assistance with personal care needs in a discrete and dignified manner. During the Christmas party that took place throughout our inspection, people were seen to be happy and enjoying themselves.

We spoke with a relative who told us, "Mum is well cared for and her needs are attended to by caring staff. I feel relieved that I can take a step back from mum's care".
