During a routine inspection

During our visit to Accessible Orthodontics in Oxford we met with the practice manager, the clinical director, two orthodontists and a primary care (dental) compliance consultant. We spoke with two patients and with three members of staff.

Patients were given explanations of their treatment which they understood. One patient we spoke with said "the treatment options are explained and you get a letter that sets the options out'.

Patient's welfare was taken into account when treatment was planned. The medical history of patients was checked before treatment was started. A patient told us "they [the orthodontist] asks me if there have been any changes in my health".

The risk of infection from practice processes and procedures was reduced. However, risks from the environment and premises had not been effectively identified, assessed and managed. For example, we did not find a legionella risk assessment in place or any evidence of management control measures to reduce the risk of infection from waterborne bacteria.

Staff were well supported to carry out their roles and responsibilities. Staff undertook training appropriate to their job role.

There were effective systems in place to assure quality of service provision. Clinical audits were carried out and results acted upon. For example orthodontists were reminded to check patient's medical history once a year.

During a routine inspection

The patients we spoke with were happy with the treatment they received from the practice. They said they had been given the information needed to make an informed decision about treatment. People had received the aftercare advice they needed. We were given positive feedback about the approach of all of the staff.
