All Inspections

6 June 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we met the registered manager and three members of staff who provide the care in children's homes. We spoke by telephone with two family members who had experience of using the service.

Care plans were clear and contained details of the support staff needed to provide. Staff we spoke with were knowledgeable about the care needs of each person.

The staff team were experienced and received training to give them the knowledge and skills they needed to do their jobs well. Families felt well supported and appreciated having a small team of support workers.

Family members were given clear information about how to raise any concerns they might have about the service.

We found that family members of children who used the service were asked for their views about the care and treatment provided. Parents told us that they were consulted about the service their child received on a regular basis and they felt their views were listened to and taken into account. Comments included, 'We couldn't ask for a better service and support worker;' and 'It is a fabulous service.'

19 July 2012

During a routine inspection

We carried out an inspection visit on 19 July to Integrated Disability Service Short Break Service (IDS) at its Lancaster House base.

We met with the registered manager for the service and the operations manager for IDS Short Break Service. We discussed care and support for children who use the service and looked at some of the records and documentation held there. We were told the IDS aimed to provide quality assured short break provision to those families in need of a break.

We spoke with the parents of two children that received support from IDS. They told us they were involved in care planning and were happy with the support their children received.

One parent said they were impressed with the knowledge and skills the staff presented, saying 'they update training all the time.' Another parent commented that the support worker was like 'part of the family.' All parents said they had confidence in workers and were very happy with their approach, attitude and helpfulness.

We spoke with two support workers and found they were very positive about working for IDS. They demonstrated a sound understanding of the needs of the children they were supporting. They also told us they were provided with plenty of training, including training specific to individual children's care needs.
