People should be protected from abuse and staff should respect their human rights (outcome 7)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are protected from abuse, or the risk of abuse, and their human rights are respected and upheld.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 4 March 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

Reasons for our judgement

The service had its own safeguarding procedures and these were accessible to staff. We saw from the records that safeguarding was included in the induction for new staff. In addition to this the people who used the service were given safeguarding information in their information pack including contact details for local authority safeguarding teams and for the provider.

We saw training records for all staff which showed they received regular training in safeguarding. No notifications had been made to the local authority under the safeguarding protocol. However we spoke with three staff who all confirmed they had undertaken training and demonstrated through discussion they understood their responsibilities in relation to safeguarding and knew what action to take in the event of an allegation or suspicion of abuse. This demonstrated how the provider ensured people who used the service were protected from abuse by having effective safeguarding systems in place.

The provider should note that individual schedules given to staff included names and addresses of people alongside the access codes for their key safe. This presented a risk to people and we discussed with the manager ways in which the access codes might be held safely separately from the addresses.
