During a routine inspection

We visited someone who received care in their own home and carried out telephone interviews with two people who used the service. We spoke with two staff and the manager. People we spoke with confirmed the care they received was planned and that they were involved in the process. Records showed that people's preferences were being taken into consideration on assessment. People fed back to us that they were happy with the care they received. One person said, "I am very happy with the service. Staff are well trained and willing to learn about my specific condition in order that they can give the best care." A second person told us, "The staff really are very good and always go the extra mile. I would be stuck without them."

People's dignity, privacy and their independence was promoted. One person said, "Staff make me feel comfortable during personal care." People told us they felt safe using the service. We found that staff were clear about the action they should take should they become aware of an allegation of abuse and we found that training for all staff was ongoing.

At our last inspection in October 2012, we found that up to date training had not been provided to staff for the role they performed. At this inspection we found staff had the relevant skills and qualifications to deliver care to people, including those with dementia. They had received training around all the mandatory topics, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and medication.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people using the service and two relatives. They all told us that they were happy and felt safe. One person said, "This is a very good service and much better than the previous service we used. Staff communicate well with us and have learned to deliver care in the way that we prefer. They are punctual and allow themselves enough time with each of their clients." Another person said, "The carers who come to assist me are generally of a high standard. I enjoy their company and it allows my relative to have some time for themselves."

We found the service to be compliant with the outcomes we looked at. Staff were knowledgeable about the needs and preferences of people using the service. Care records were clear and up to date and risk assessments were in place where appropriate. People were able to suggest ways to improve the service and these were acted on. However, we found that some training is not yet in place for some staff. We were concerned that some staff were dispensing medications for people, but had not been trained in medication adminstration.
