People should be protected from abuse and staff should respect their human rights (outcome 7)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are protected from abuse, or the risk of abuse, and their human rights are respected and upheld.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 2 October 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse through staff training.

Reasons for our judgement

There was a policy statement referring to child protection however, no such statement existed relating to safeguarding vulnerable adults. The provider may wish to note that ensuring the contact details for the local child protection and safeguarding adults teams were kept in the practice would mean there would be no delay in reporting concerns.

Staff records showed that staff had completed training in child protection and safeguarding vulnerable adults. When we spoke with staff they demonstrated a good understanding of the issues and said they would discuss concerns with the dentist.

We saw there was a whistle-blowing policy that listed an external contact. Staff told us they would not tolerate poor practice from a colleague and would report concerns to the dentist.
