During a routine inspection

Our inspection took place over two days and we were accompanied on our first day by an expert by experience.

We spoke with people accommodated in "No 16" and seven other similar properties provided by The Providence Projects for people who attended their structured day programmes.

In total we spoke with13 people to hear about their experiences of the support and help they received.

We spoke with four of staff team about training and their roles and responsibilities.

We also spoke with representatives from two statutory agencies who had arranged placements for people at The Providence Projects for their views about the service.

The 13 people we spoke with were at different stages of their treatment programmes but all expressed positive views. They told us they were treated with respect. People who had had specific cultural needs said these were accommodated and upheld.

There were arrangements in place that ensured the help and support people required was assessed and delivered in a way that met their individual needs.

People were protected from risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medication.

The provider had arrangements in place that ensured staff were appropriately supported in relation to their responsibilities to enable them to provide the support and help people needed.

The provider had effective systems in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service they provided and ensure risks to the welfare and safety of people were properly managed.

4 May 2012

During a routine inspection

There were 32 people taking part in recovery programmes run by Providence Projects when we visited '16' and another similar property on Friday 4 May 2012.

We spoke with six people who told us about the support and help they received while taking part in a recovery programme. Four of the people we spoke with were accommodated at the two properties we looked at.

All the people we spoke with told us that they were happy with their accommodation. Their descriptions of the standard of accommodation included, 'comfortable', 'more than adequate', 'lovely', 'wonderful', 'really nice'. One person said, 'I have my own room and it gives me time out. I like my personal space'. Another person told us that there had been problems with some equipment in their accommodation that had taken some time to replace.

People said they were involved in discussions and meetings to identify the help they wanted and in the treatment plans that they agreed. They told us that certain restrictions were imposed on them and they had been made fully aware of them before they started their treatment programmes. They all expressed positive views about the help and support they received from the staff and the benefits of their treatment programmes. They told us that the staff treated them with respect and described staff as 'fantastic', 'supportive', 'genuine', 'approachable', 'sensitive', 'competent' and 'caring'.

People told us they felt safe when staying in their accommodation and also when attending the centres where most of the treatment programme activities took place.

We also spoke with four staff about their experiences of working for Providence Projects. They told us that their working relationships were 'close' and 'supportive'. They said they received regular training about health and safety subjects and also received relevant training about their respective roles.
