People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We reviewed information we asked the provider to send to us.

Our judgement

There were effective staff recruitment and selection processes in place.

Reasons for our judgement

At our previous inspection of 3 January 2013 we were concerned to note that two members of staff had begun working at the practice before two suitable references and criminal records checks had been obtained for them. This put people at unnecessary risk from receiving their treatment from unsuitable staff and we made a compliance action as a result.

Since this visit, the provider had reviewed their entire staff recruitment, selection and induction policies, copies of which we reviewed. Although no new members of staff had been employed at the practice since our visit, the new policies showed that appropriate references and criminal records checks would now be obtained prior to a new employee starting. The provider told us that the new policies had been disseminated to all staff at meeting held on 18 January 2013 so that they were aware of the changes.
