During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not rate this service at this inspection. The previous rating of outstanding remains. At this inspection we found:

  • All wards were safe, clean, well equipped, well furnished, well maintained and fit for purpose
  • The service had enough nursing and medical staff, who knew the patients and most had received basic training to keep patients safe from avoidable harm
  • Staff assessed and managed risks to patients and themselves well and followed best practice in anticipating, de-escalating and managing challenging behaviour
  • Staff understood how to protect patients from abuse and the service worked well with other agencies to do so. Staff had training on how to recognise and report abuse and they knew how to apply it
  • Staff had easy access to clinical information, and it was easy for them to maintain high quality clinical records
  • The service used systems and processes to safely prescribe, administer, record and store medicines
  • Staff felt respected, supported and valued. They felt able to raise concerns without fear of retribution.

During a routine inspection

People were asked for their consent and their treatment options were discussed with them. People told us, 'I'm here because I wanted to be here,' and 'I gave my consent to be here as an outpatient.'

People spoke positively about their experience of care and treatment. A person who used the eating disorder service told us, 'This is a patient centred and patient focussed service; it feels homely, it is a very nice environment. There is the time and the availability to give you the care you need. We get one-to-one sessions every day.' Another person said, 'They work with you in a way that is very gentle and give you the respect you need.'

People who used the service spoke positively about its cleanliness. One person commented, 'Cleanliness looks top class everywhere.'

People commented about the staff that worked with them. A visiting healthcare professional told us, 'Everyone is approachable; there is an ethos of people working together.' One person said, 'The nursing staff go out of their way to care for you; I was very surprised at how kind the staff are and how much they invest in getting to know you. They have a very good working relationship with each other.'

People we asked about making a complaint told us, 'If someone wanted to complain, we have been given a form to complete,' and 'I have had no need to think about complaining here; there is something about advocacy if you are not happy with the service.'
