During an inspection looking at part of the service

The provider submitted an action plan with supporting documents. This provided evidence that action had been taken to address each of the areas of non-compliance. During our visit to the service in October 2012 we were to confirm this. We also saw the construction and fitting out of a significantly enhanced decontamination facility was nearing completion.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us they received a good and functional explanation of their care and treatment including the costs involved and options available to them. They said they were asked to consent to their treatment and any questions they had were answered satisfactorily. They said they felt involved in and able to make informed decisions about their care and treatment. They felt their privacy was respected and that staff were professional and reassuring. They said that the information provided by dental staff was mainly verbal and this included advice about general dental care. The people we spoke with had not been asked for their feedback on the service. They told us they would raise any concerns with the principal dentist although they were not sure if that was the formal procedure.

People told us they had completed a medical history form on the day of our visit and could recall being asked previously about their medical history. They said they had received a full dental examination and this was regularly reviewed. The people we spoke with said they found the appointments system easy to use and were able to get the appointments they wanted. They said they were seen quickly when they had a dental emergency.

People said they found the environment clean and well maintained. They told us that staff would always wear protective equipment such as masks and gloves during their care. Some people said they had noticed surfaces and equipment being wiped and cleaned at the end of their care and treatment.

One person described his experience of the service as: '.excellent. I have no complaints at all'. Another person said: 'This service was recommended to me unconditionally and I would offer similar advice if someone asked me. The staff here are first rate'.
