During an inspection looking at part of the service

We undertook an inspection on 5 July 2013. We found the provider was not meeting one of the 'Essential Standards of Quality and Safety'. The inspection identified concerns regarding cleanliness and infection control.

The provider was required to provide a report that stated what action they were going to take to achieve compliance with the essential standard. The provider submitted an action plan on 31 August 2013. The purpose of the inspection was to check that the necessary improvements had been made to ensure compliance with the essential standard.

We found that the procedures for the decontamination and sterilisation of dental instruments had been changed to ensure they were in line with the essential requirements of the Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 01-05. The HTM is the guidance that all dentists must follow in order to ensure that their practice is safe and minimises the risks of cross infection.

5 July 2013

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with three patients regarding their experience of the service and their involvement in treatment planning. One person expressed a concern that they had not experienced continuity of care from the same dentist. We were told that medical histories were taken regularly and that advice was given following a course of treatment.

We viewed six treatment plans. We found that treatments were explained and that the fees charged were in accordance with NHS dental band charges. People told us that appointments could be made easily and that staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. One person we spoke with told us 'They're very flexible and they work around my schedule'.

People we spoke with confirmed that information about their treatment and the available options had been given to them. Comments included 'they tell me what I do and what I haven't been doing. They're very good and tell me how to improve my oral health' and 'they explain things to you'.

We found that there was a safeguarding policy in place. The policy provided the procedures involved in raising concerns about the possible abuse of children and vulnerable adults

We looked at the procedures for infection control and decontamination of dental Instruments. We found that although procedures were in place, improvements in this area were required.

We found that there were robust procedures in place to assess and monitor the quality of service provision.
