During a routine inspection

We joined Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) on their planned visit to prison. We, HMIP and Ofsted inspectors held discussions with the men at various points during the visit. Also HMIP completed a pre-inspection questionnaire and this asked specific questions about the healthcare services within the prison.

We found that the prisoners were very happy with Care UK Clinical Services Ltd services. The men told us that they found the nurses delivered a good service and were accessible. They said 'The nurses are helpful" and 'The nurses do a good job.'

We found that the service was very busy with about 1100 patient contacts per month. The men found that the length they waited to see the visiting practitioners, the GP and the provider's nurses was acceptable and most were seen within days of putting in the application for an appointment. We found that the directly provided services operated to a good standard and their working relationships with other healthcare organisations led to effective care being delivered.

The in-patient unit was run as a regional unit and although the facilities for those patients who were terminally ill was good, the main in-patient unit needed to be refurbished as did some of the wing treatment units. The showers on the unit were not fit for purpose and adequate sluices were required.
