During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 10 May 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, We usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic was visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. However, improvements were required in regards to checks undertaken of emergency equipment
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had checks in place for the recruitment of staff
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements. However, improvements were required in regards to the range of policies in place

Background

Ayling Associates is in Hayes in South East London, within the London Borough of Bromley and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for disabled people, are available near the practice.

The dental team includes one dentist, one dental nurse, one dental hygienist and a practice Manager. The practice has two treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with a dentist, a dental nurse, a dental hygienist and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8:30am – 6:00 pm

Wednesday 8:30 am -7:00 pm

Friday 9:30 am - 2:30 pm

  • There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement an effective system of checks of medical emergency equipment and medicines taking into account the guidelines issued by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the General Dental Council.

  • Take action to ensure all clinicians are adequately supported by a trained member of the dental team when treating patients in a dental setting taking into account the guidance issued by the General Dental Council.

Implement an effective system for receiving and responding to patient safety alerts, recalls and rapid response reports issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, the Central Alerting System and other relevant bodies, such as Public Health England.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us that staff were kind and considerate of their needs and any anxieties they may have had about their appointments. One person told us that "staff treat you with respect and put you at ease". Another person told us that the treatment they received had been "excellent" and the staff had a "friendly and caring approach". People we spoke with told us they found all areas of the practice to be very clean when they visited

We found that people were offered choices in the treatment they received and were provided with appropriate information to assist them in making their decisions. People's care and treatment was planned and carried out based on an assessment of their individual needs. Records of treatment were fit for purpose and securely stored.

Appropriate guidelines were in place and followed by staff regarding cleanliness and infection control. We also found that staff were well supported in their professional development and that the provider had suitable procedures in place regarding the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children.
