During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection we looked at care, staff and medication records, observed care practices and undertook a tour of the premises. We did this to confirm people were being supported safely and the home was being well maintained. We also spoke with people living at the home, people visiting their relatives and interviewed staff and the person in charge.

The inspection identified concerns with the homes care planning arrangements and care practices. We observed unsafe moving and handling procedures. These potentially placed both staff and the people being supported at risk of injury. There were no activities being organised to stimulate people. Most people we saw spent their time asleep in the lounge or with little contact from the staff on duty. We also identified concerns with the standard of accommodation being provided. Recruitment and medication procedures were also found to be unsafe.

Comments received from people we spoke with included:

'I visit three times a week at various times of the day. I have met most of the staff who I think are very caring. The home requires a lot of work but person operating the home is working hard to make improvements'.

'There has been an issue with lost clothes and sharing clothes with other residents''

"The staff are very attentive and caring people. I was unwell recently and they responded very quickly to get me medical attention. I was so grateful to them".

"The meals are very good and we get plenty to eat".

"My mum has made lots of friends since she moved into the home. She likes the staff and I also find them very friendly. She's always very clean and well presented when I visit. I have no concerns or complaints about anything".

During our inspection we identified some concerns about how the building was being maintained. We also expressed concerns about the management arrangements in place and quality monitoring systems.

'I have lived at the home for over ten years and have no complaints about my care. I am well treated and get on very well with the staff who are all kind and friendly. The food is good and we get plenty to eat. I wouldn't stay if I was unhappy'.

'I looked around a few homes before deciding on this one. The home was known to me and I have been pleased with my choice. I have suffered health problems recently and the staff have been very good with me. They understand the support I need and are so patient and kind. I can honestly say there isn't a single staff member I haven't taken to'.
