All Inspections

12 September 2013

During a routine inspection

At a previous inspection dated 11 June 2013, we found the provider had failed to ensure information regarding staff recruitment was available, as specified in Schedule 3 of the regulations. The provider sent us an action plan which stated what they would do to achieve compliance and declared they would be compliant by August 2013. At this inspection we found the provider had taken all necessary steps and was now compliant with the regulations.

We viewed six recruitments files and found them to contain correct information relating to schedule three of the regulations. This included a full employment history with no gaps in employment. Recent photos, proof of identity and evidence of a Disclosure and Barring Service check, were present on each file. Relevant references from previous employers were also present and a medical health questionnaire had been completed by staff.

We spoke with four people who use the service. People we spoke with spoke highly of the practice. They said they were treated with respect and had treatment choices explained to them. One person told us, 'you are offered a personal service. The staff are professional and first class.' Others told us, 'it is a wonderful atmosphere, in fact you don't mind going to the dentist when it is like that' and 'they are best dentist I have ever been to.'

We viewed six patient records. We found dental health needs were accurately documented and updated at each visit. Records evidenced clear information provided to people about treatment options and the costs involved.

We spoke to staff and observed their practices with decontamination and sterilisation of medical equipment. We toured the practice and found it to be clean and tidy. The practice had effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. We spoke with staff regarding the cleaning of used instruments. This was in line with guidelines within the Department of Health's guidance known as HTM 01 05.

People we spoke to were happy with the care provided to them and none had made a complaint. One person told us, "I've never had any problems, but if I did I would discuss it with the dentist".

The practice had adequate recruitment policy and procedures. However recruitment files did not contain all the information required for Schedule three of the regulations.
