During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection on 05 July 2013, we had moderate concerns in relation to the lack of proper arrangements in place to deal with respecting and involving people who use services, infection control, supporting staff and assessing the quality of service.

The purpose of this visit was to check if improvements had been made.

During this inspection we spoke with three members of staff, these were the practice manager, a dental nurse and a dentist.

We found that the provider had made improvements in all areas. In relation to respecting and involving people who use services the provider has identified how to obtain translation services and all notes viewed had signed consent forms which meant that people were involved in their care and treatment.

To cover Infection control the provider has identified a dental nurse to lead in this area, we saw that documentation and cleaning schedules had been put in place.

We saw documentation and spoke to staff relating to supporting workers, and assessing the quality of service and found that the provider was complying with the regulations.

5 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with one dentist, two trainee dental nurses, a receptionist and four people who used the service during the inspection. People who used the service told us that they were happy with it and trusted the dentist. One person told us "If I was not happy I would not come back again", and another person said "I've been coming here for 16 years and I would recommend it".

We found that people's medical history was updated on each visit and this was recorded on their treatment records. We saw that this service provided treatment for a number of people for whom English was not their first language and we found that the service did not have systems in place to help people understand their treatment options.

We saw that record keeping at the service was poor which made it difficult for us to be certain that all infection control checks, audits of systems, training of staff and servicing and maintenance of equipment was taking place.
