Patients were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

User experience

Patients said that the practice and treatment rooms were clean.

Other evidence

We saw that staff were wearing personal protective equipment. Patients wore protective goggles. During the inspection we found that the rooms were clean.

There was a designated decontamination room. Used instruments were transported there in sealed boxes. There was a clear flow of work to prevent clean and dirty items contaminating each other. There were posters on the walls showing the direction of workflow. There were other posters showing how washing and decontamination should be carried out. Instruments were inspected with a magnifying light following cleansing to ensure they were clear of any debris. Autoclaves were used to sterilise the instruments at the correct temperatures. A sealed packaging and dating system completed the process and instruments were stored appropriately. There were records of cleaning cycles and machines were checked in accordance with manufactures’ guidance. This system was in accordance with Department of Health guidelines for decontamination in primary care dental practices.

Other daily and weekly checks were carried out on equipment and cleaning routines. There were audits of hygiene. There was a named person responsible for hygiene. There were contracts in place for the removal of waste products and sharp disposable items. These items were stored appropriately prior to being collected.

The practice had replaced pump action hand gel dispensers with automated dispensers. This reduces the danger of cross contamination. The hand gel dispensers were full.

All the staff had completed training in infection prevention control.
