How this check was done

Our judgement

The provider was meeting this standard.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

User experience

People said that they were satisfied with the care they received. They said that, “(the dentist) took the time to explain… (issues) … in terms I could understand” and “I now know why and how … (certain problems) … arose”.

Other evidence

Patients' needs were assessed and treatment delivered in accordance with that individual’s needs. We looked at treatment plans and they took account of guidance about how long a treatment should be left before being re-assessed. The records showed that patients were involved in deciding on the options available to them. Treatment plans we saw recorded the options that were open to patients including the option to do nothing for the present.

We saw that there was a flagging system on the computerised plans. This alerted the dentist or nurse to underlying issues such as diabetes or allergies. The system also allowed other issues, such as not being able to swallow easily, to be identified to the healthcare professional.

There were slots available each day to provide emergency medical treatment. The number of the Kent wide emergency dental out of hours service was displayed on the front door of the building.

Staff had had basic first aid training. Emergency first aid drills had been carried out quarterly. On the last occasion a patient had acted as the stooge, feigning a faint. Staff agreed that this had made the exercise much more realistic and they had learned more from it. The practice planned to use volunteer patients in future drills.
