Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

When we visited Dental Healthcare Marlow on 12 February 2013 we found full recruitment checks had not been carried out for all staff at the practice. This meant people could not be confident they were always being cared for, or supported by, suitably skilled and experienced staff who were physically and mentally fit to do so. We asked the provider to send us an action plan telling us how they intended to achieve compliance.

We received an action plan from Dental Healthcare Marlow dated 11 March 2013. This provided details of the action taken to achieve compliance since our compliance review visit of February 2013. The evidence provided showed there were now effective recruitment and selection processes in place.

We saw documentary evidence which showed Disclosure and Barring Service checks had been completed for staff who did not previously have one. We saw satisfactory references had been obtained for a recently employed dental nurse. We received confirmation of the provision of a recent photograph, confirmation of hepatitis B inoculation and the completion of occupational health checks for all staff who did not previously have them.

We saw evidence appropriate checks were now undertaken before staff began work. We received confirmation a review of the provider's recruitment policy had been undertaken. The provider confirmed this meant all new employees would go through an interview process. Details of previous employment would be verified and references taken up. Proof of identity, including a recent photograph would be obtained together with confirmation of any appropriate inoculations. A Disclosure and Barring Service check at the appropriate level would also be undertaken in all cases. Evidence would also be sought as to the applicant's mental and physical fitness for the post applied for. This provided confidence people who received treatment would be protected from the employment of unsuitable staff.
