During an inspection looking at part of the service

When we inspected on 27 January 2014, we saw that the provider's emergency oxygen cylinder was nearly empty. The provider did not regularly check and record the status of the cylinder. This meant that the provider was failing to comply with the requirements of Regulation 9(2) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010. We asked the provider to take action.

When we inspected again on 26 June 2014, we noted that a new oxygen cylinder had been purchased and that it was regularly checked. The action taken by the provider was sufficient to comply with the requirements of the regulation.

When we inspected in January 2014, staff were unaware of certain elements of Department of Health (DH) infection control guidance. In addition, activities relating to the provider's last legionella risk assessment had not taken place. This meant that the provider was failing to comply with the requirements of Regulation 12 (1) (a) (b) (c) (2) (a) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010. We asked the provider to take action.

When we inspected again in June, we noted that an infection control audit had recently taken place and that staff demonstrated knowledge and understanding of DH infection control/prevention guidance. A legionella risk assessment had also recently taken place. The action taken by the provider was sufficient to comply with the requirements of the regulation.

During a routine inspection

Patients told us they had been treated with respect and dignity. They were well-informed about their treatment plans which they said they had contributed to at every stage. Patients told us they had been given information to assist their decisions regarding treatment, including costs and treatment options.

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. Patients we spoke with were positive the quality of the treatment they received. Three of the four patients we spoke with told us that treatment was explained to them in a way they understood, including any associated risks. One patient commented "I think they're a very good dentist.'

Patients were positive about the cleanliness of the practice. However, we were concerned that regular infection control audits did not take place in line with guidelines set out by the Department of Health Technical Memorandum 01-05 (HTM 01-05) Decontamination in primary care dental practices.

Systems were in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service. Most records relating to patients were kept securely and could be located promptly when needed.
