During an inspection looking at part of the service

At this inspection we spoke with the manager and a member of staff. We carried out this inspection to follow up on concerns raised at our last inspection when we found that people were not always protected from the risk of infection.

We found that the provider had take steps to address the concerns raised. New floor coverings and work surfaces had been installed and the surgeries redecorated and repaired. The practice was clean and tidy and staff had received update training in infection control. The staff we spoke with were found to be knowledgeable and could indentify the steps they needed to take to ensure patients were not placed at risk of infection.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with patients in one of the two waiting areas of the practice. All of the patients we spoke with were positive about their experience. They told us that they found the staff to be 'Good and friendly.' Another patient said "I am happy with my treatment."

We saw that patient's views were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered. For example, we were show records that demonstrated that the dentists had discussed treatment options with patients and their parents.

We were told that the practice maintained patient records which included up to date medical histories, medical alerts and treatment plans. We looked at five patients' care records which confirmed this. Staff told us that the orthodontist or hygienist would verbally check the medical history at each treatment visit. The records demonstrated that dentist and hygienist got consent from patients before they started any treatment.

We saw that the practice had appropriate systems in place to manage medical emergencies. We saw evidence that equipment was routinely serviced and maintained.

We saw documentation which confirmed that all relevant staff employed by the service held current registrations with their professional body the General Dental Council (GDC). We also saw documents which confirmed that the practice held checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for all staff. This meant that the service had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

We identified shortfalls in the cleanliness and infection control. Although the areas where the public had access were visibly clean and tidy at the time of our inspection other areas presented an infection control risk.
