During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

During our compliance review in February 2012 we found that the provider was not meeting government standards in relation to outcome 7: regulation 11. This was because Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks were not in place for all staff members. Also the staff we spoke with did not have a good knowledge of the clinics policies in relation to adult and child protection.

We issued the provider with a compliance action that required the provider to make improvements at Dental Works by Shaz and Associates. The provider sent us an action plan which set out the actions they were going to take to improve the service. We contacted the provider in March 2013 to establish whether they had completed the actions that they had included in their action plan.

They told us that all staff employed at the clinic had obtained CRB clearance and this was supported with documentary evidence. They told us that all staff had attended training on child protection and safeguarding adults and had read the clinics child protection and safeguarding adult's policies. The provider also supplied copies of these policies to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people using this service. Each person had received treatment from this practice for three and five years respectively.

People said that they had been happy with the treatment they had received. They told us they had been informed of the treatment required and explanations had been given as to why particular treatments had been recommended. Both people said they had given written consent for their treatment prior to treatments taking place.

People said they had been given supporting information in written format and through conversation. One person said he had been shown the new crown machine and the dentist had explained how the machine worked.

Both people described the staff as professional, friendly and informative. One person said that discussions had been kept confidential and had felt safe receiving treatment at the practice.

People said the clinic and dental instruments were always 'very clean' and disposable cups had been used to contain mouth wash solutions.
