During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last on inspection on 31 July 2013 we found people using the service and people working at the practice were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance was not being followed. The provider told us the actions they would take to meet the essential standard would be completed by 21 September 2013.

At our inspection on 25 November 2013 we found infection control guidance was being followed and the provider was compliant with this essential standard.

We also took the opportunity to inspect the practice's sedation service because we had been unable to do this at our last inspection. We found the sedation service was meeting the essential standard.

We did not speak to people using the service as part of our inspection because of the nature of the essential standards we were inspecting.

During a routine inspection

People using the service we spoke with were mostly very happy with the service. They all told us their dentist explained why they needed treatment well and discussed options with them, including costs. Most of the people we spoke with made a point of telling us they had great confidence in their dentist's expertise and professionalism. For example, one person said; 'I only really trust him. He has my interests at heart. He's an excellent dentist. A very nice guy, very professional'. Another person said about another dentist at the practice; 'He really puts you at ease. He explained everything properly and I've gone private. I'm thrilled to bits with what he's done.' All the people we spoke with told us staff were friendly and many said the practice was well run. A few people told us their dentist had been running late that day, although none said they felt the wait had been unreasonable.

We found people using the service were involved in decisions about their care and were treated with dignity and respect. They experienced treatment and care that met their needs. The provider had completed checks on dentists coming to work at the practice to ensure they were suitable, and there were systems in place to monitor the quality of service people received. People using the service were not being protected against the risk and spread of infection.
