People should get safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and supports their rights (outcome 4)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Experience effective, safe and appropriate care, treatment and support that meets their needs and protects their rights.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 23 November 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

Reasons for our judgement

We spoke with two people who used the service. They both told us they felt the practice delivered care and treatment in a way that met their needs and felt safe when they had treatment. One person told us "Conor has restored my faith in dentists. I had some very bad experiences in the past but since coming to Duffield Road I feel safe. Conor is very friendly, very competent and quick in what he does". Another person told us "I think the environment is very clean. The practice has recently unergone some decoration and it is to the standard I have come to expect".

Both people we spoke to told us they had not had any difficulty in making appointments. One person told us "I have never had a problem getting an appointment. I am always fitted in either the same day or the next".

We saw that the dentist spoke regularly about what he was doing to people using the service. He would call people by their name and explain everything that he was doing prior to doing it. Throughout the treatments he would provide constance reassurance to the person, putting them at their ease. We saw that when fillings were being extracted, the dentist told the person that if there was any pain or discomfort to raise their left hand so that he knew to stop. This shows that the provider was delivering care and treatment so that people were safe, their welfare protected and their needs met.

We saw that all members of staff had received training in resuscitation techniques. There is resuscitation equipment located outside of the dental surgery, as well as emergency medicines. We saw that the equipment was well maintained and regularly checked and that medicines were stored correctly. This shows that there were arrangements in place to deal with medical emergencies.
