During a routine inspection

On our previous visit February 13th 2012, we made a number of compliance actions because we found. The Provider was not respecting and involving people who used the service; we also had concerns about the care and welfare of people who used the service; the safeguarding of people who used the service and the cleanliness and infection control. We found the provider had implemented the action plan to address these issues and found the provider compliant in all of these areas.

We spoke with three people who had visited the dentist for treatment on the day of our inspection visit. They each told us that they had their treatment options explained and were asked to give their consent for treatment. We looked at seven records during our visit and we saw notes had been completed for each visit and the treatment plan completed.

One person we spoke with told us, "The dentist was recommended to me and I have used it for many years with no cause to complain." We observed the practice was clean and had two surgeries on the ground floor. Another person told us, 'I appreciate being fitted in at short-notice and helps me around my working arrangements.' The dental nurse showed us the decontamination room and how instruments were cleaned and sterilised. We saw the dentist had sought people's opinion and involved them in the practice through the use of different surveys every four months. The practice had good quality monitoring systems in place and equipment was serviced as required.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with five people who use the service. In some cases they had been receiving care and treatment at the service for a number of years. One person commented that the dentist always told them 'The truth about my teeth and whether I have been cleaning them right.' Another told us that they would like the service to offer NHS care to adults again but would never leave because they 'Liked and trusted' the staff.

All five of the people told us the dentist was always assisted by a Dental Nurse. Two people told us that if they were nervous or anxious staff were considerate and made sure they had things explained to them. During our visit we saw that the service had several families who came in for check ups and treatments at the same time. Staff told us they tried to do this as much as possible to accommodate the busy lives of the people they see.
