All Inspections

3 July 2013

During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this inspection after we received information about a fire at the practice. Although badly damaged, we found the building was being used safely and the dental provider had made alternative arrangement for people who needed level access due to their disability or physical frailty.

We looked at arrangements for the safe use of equipment, and found there were robust servicing and safety arrangements in place. This ensured people were not placed at risk by faulty or poorly maintained equipment, such as disinfectors and electrical items.

We asked for a range of records from the provider. These were located promptly, were well ordered and securely stored.

Although we did not speak to patients during this inspection, we found the provider had conducted an extensive consultation exercise with patients. This was to inform them about the damage to the practice and to offer consultations and treatment at alternative premises, but with the same dental team. We saw the feedback from patients was overwhelmingly positive.

During a routine inspection

We asked four people who used the service for their views about the treatment they received. Everyone said their treatment options were discussed and that their consent was sought.

Regarding the standard of care offered, people said they were treated with courtesy and respect and that dental staff were able to put them at their ease. One person told us, '[The Dentist] puts me totally at ease, he is patient with me and very kind.'

We spoke with a dental nurse, reception staff and the Practice Manager. Discussions with these staff showed they were alert to their responsibilities should they have concerns about the safety and well being of any child or vulnerable adult. The practice was clean, and appropriate arrangements were in place to prevent and control infections.

We checked a sample of staff records and found appropriate training had been carried out. One person commented, 'The staff are very polite and very friendly, the dentists also.' Another person told us, 'Excellent friendly service from all.' We found that people were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.
