During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

At our inspection on 8 February 2013 we found that the service did not have effective systems in place to ensure that people were always protected from the risk of infection. This was because some of the furniture was damaged and presented an infection control risk.

The provider has sent us written confirmation that they have taken steps to address the identified shortfall and the furniture has been repaired.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of the centre on 8 February 2013 we found that consent was gained from people prior to examinations and treatment taking place.

Care and treatment met the needs of people attending the centre. We spoke with one person who received treatment. They told us, 'The care has been great.' They said staff had been welcoming and confirmed that treatment options had been discussed with them and that staff had explained what these meant.

We found that the centre was clean and tidy. However, we found damaged furniture, including treatment couches. These posed a risk of cross infection to the people using them.

Staff were well trained and, on the whole, supported by their manager. They had received training in various important areas, including life support, infection control and information governance.

The provider had investigated complaints and responded appropriately to people. Where appropriate, changes had been made to rectify situations that had caused complaint.

During a routine inspection

When we visited the service on 20 February 2012 we spoke with people in the waiting room, who were waiting to be seen. Everyone who we spoke with praised the service, and told us that it was an excellent local facility. They were aware of the services that the Urgent Care Centre provided, including xray, wound dressings and minor treatments. One person who had attended the Urgent Care Centre previously said that they were referred to their GP afterwards, and information was sent to the GP. They said that they were very happy with the service.

One person had hurt their foot, and expected that it would be xrayed and, if necessary, a dressing applied. One person said, 'I expect to be treated here and not to be sent off to a different hospital for my sprained ankle.', and another person told us, ''I know that when I am treated here my GP will get the information about why I was here and is in the know.'
