During a routine inspection

We spoke with seven people who lived at Richmond Village about their experiences of the service. We also spoke with three relatives about their family member's experience. We observed the care that was given to people during our inspection. We spoke with a range of staff including the registered manager.

People and relatives we spoke with told us that the care planning was discussed with them regularly. We saw that people or relatives were involved with the reviews of people's care.

We saw that staff listened to people about their care needs and their wishes. We saw people's independence was promoted within their care plans and on the day of our inspection.

We found that the care plans were person centred and reflected people's individual needs. We saw the members of staff supported people as detailed within their care plans. We observed that staff were compassionate and caring when supporting people.

We saw care plans related to people's nutritional needs were reviewed every month. We saw that people were supported during meal times and the right equipment was available for people to use.

We saw the provider ensured that the appropriate checks were undertaken before a new member of staff was employed. New members of staff told us about the induction plan they had completed during their employment.

We found the provider had systems were in place to monitor the quality of service being provided and the service was well led.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people and one relative of a family member that lived at Richmond Village. We also spoke to a registered nurse and two other staff members.

People we spoke with told us that the care they received matched the care that was discussed with them. People told us that they were involved in their care and would hold six monthly discussions with the staff about their care plans. We saw that care plans were reviewed every six months and were signed by the people involved with the review.

People we spoke with told us they were able to have personal items displayed within their bedrooms and staff knocked on their bedroom door before entering.

We saw that people enjoyed the range of activities that were offered and that there were events scheduled for the week. Relatives told us they were invited to join in with activities and attended events that the service held.

People we spoke with told us that they received the correct medication and it was administered at the right time. We saw that medication was handled appropriately and administered safely. We saw the registered nurse explained to people using the service why they were taking the medication and how it would help them.

Staff we spoke with told us about the training they had undertaken and the support they received. We saw the provider had a training matrix and a system in place to identify training needs for staff.

13 December 2011

During a routine inspection

With the assistance of an expert by experience we spoke with seven people living at Richmond Village nursing home. We asked people if they had been involved in choosing the home and about the admission process.

We were told: 'I suggested it, I wanted to come here' 'I was not particularly involved in choosing the home; care services found it and recommended it'.

People told us they did not necessarily know what was in their care plan but most people told us they were satisfied with the care they were receiving. They told us: 'We don't discuss my care, I am satisfied and here I am'. 'Don't know what care plan is'..I am happy with care'.

We found that when checking the medicines given to people against the medicine administration charts, it was not clear that some medicines had been given as prescribed. We did however see that sample medicine audits were being regularly carried out and areas for improvement were being identified and acted upon to ensure people received their medicines correctly.

People who we saw were being cared for in bed looked comfortable. People told us: 'My needs are met most of the time'. 'the care is very good. I always get plenty to drink'.

People told us they could access a doctor when they needed to. People told us they felt safe in the home and there was someone they could talk to if they were unhappy. People told us: 'I do feel safe, not worried about anything, I wouldn't complain'. 'Yes oh yes, I feel very safe, the staff are very good'.

We received positive comments about the staff. People told us: 'I think the staff are excellent, they are a good bunch of people. They have always been respectful'. 'Most of the staff are lovely, we have a good laugh'.

Most people living at Richmond Village had something positive to say about the care and services they were receiving. Some stated there was nothing about the home they would change. People told us: 'I am happy here'. 'I am happy most of the time'.
