During a routine inspection

Many of the people living at the home had dementia and were unable to talk to us about their experiences.

As part of our inspection we spoke with two people who used the service. We also spoke with staff and looked at records.

Overall we observed that people were supported by skilled and experienced staff who understood their roles and responsibilities.

We saw people were treated with dignity and respect.

The quality assurance systems in place enabled people to express their views about the services and care they received.

We looked at procedures for administering medication and found a number of gaps in the medication administration records (MARS). This meant there was not a clear record of what medicines people had been given and would put people at risk.

People said the food was good. One person when asked if they liked the food said, 'Feed us well here.'

People told us they had choices. For example whether they preferred a bath or shower and what they would like to drink.

People told us they liked living at the home. They said, 'The room is clean and finished.'

When we asked people about staff they said, 'Staff are quite good' and 'Do work hard."

During a routine inspection

The people we spoke with told us the home was a nice place to live and they praised the staff, who they said were understanding and helpful.

One person who was visiting the home told us, 'We are regular visitors here, it's a friendly home. If there are any issues we have found we can raise them and they are sorted out'. Another person said, 'I like living here because there are things going on.'

There was a programme of activities available in the home and people told us about things they had done and had planned. A staff member who organised activities at the home showed us how information was used to make sure people did the things they liked to do and that activities fitted in with their preferences. One person said, 'I like to talk to the staff and they make time to speak and to listen.'

People were complimentary about the meals provided. One person said, 'I like the food but if I fancied anything different I would just ask for it.'

The people we spoke with also said they felt safe living at the home and they were comfortable speaking to the staff about any worries or issues they might have.

People told us that they were asked for their views about the running of the home by the manager and home owner and that they felt confident taking any suggestions or concerns to the manager or any of the staff.

Some of the people that we spoke with were unable to answer direct questions about their care and welfare, so we spent time observing care in communal areas of the home to help us gain a view on the experiences of people who live there.

When we observed care we saw staff were kind, courteous and treated people and their visitors with respect, while maintaining a positive happy atmosphere.
